A Quick Look at Gambling in Great Britain
Great Britain's gambling industry is and always has been regulated by its Gambling Commission that acts on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sports or DCMS. In the Gambling Act of 2005 which is an Act of Parliament, laws would include structures for protecting children and adults considered to be vulnerable to gambling addiction, and also includes the regulation of internet gambling.
There are many forms and kinds of gambling that can be found in Britain. Some would go to casinos either in real life or online, others would go to social gatherings that possess bingo halls or card games, and others would go to the local pub that offers gambling on horse races and the like!
In 1960, a Betting and Gaming Act was devised which allows bingo halls in commercial establishments to be built for as long as they were designed as a "members only" club, wherein they had to make money out of membership fees and rates as compared to taking a percentage from entry fees.
Casinos were the same and took their licenses from Britain's Gaming Board. In the British casinos, it was required to be for members only, just like that of commercial bingo halls. And the gaming machines were limited to about 10 machines. However this did not last long as by 1968, another Gaming Act was devised in order to allow the real commercial casino establishments; and in 2005, the doors were opened for bigger resort-style casinos to be put up, similar to those that can be seen in the Las Vegas Strip. Over the years, the city of Manchester in the North of England; was awarded the bid to be the host of what they called the "super casino". In fact, they will be the first to hold such a casino.
It is very common for the British public to gamble on sports. This has been part of their heritage and history throughout the ages, in which the most common of sports to be gambled on is horse racing, greyhound racing and soccer. The market in the United Kingdom for gambling on various sports at bookies is massive! Such gambling events have been popularized in films such as Snatch, which depicted people gambling on boxing matches.
Of course, another form of gambling which is most popular in Britain is the lottery, wherein the biggest is called the National Lottery, which came to existence in 1993 and is run by the government. No other national lottery can otherwise be established unless it was via the government of Britain.
There are a number of various forms of gambling found in the United Kingdom today, however, it is very much regulated and income from Britain's gambling sector only makes up a small portion of its economy.
